Pedal Paradise: Bicycle-Friendly Trails on the Lower Eastern Shore

Looking for your next scenic adventure on two wheels? The Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore are full of serene bike trails, quiet country roads, and coastal paths perfect for riders of all skill levels. Whether you're cruising past farmland, marshes, or seaside villages, here are some must-ride routes to explore.

1. Assateague Island National Seashore (Berlin, MD)

Distance: ~4 miles (paved trail)
Why ride here: Smooth, flat trails with stunning views of dunes, marshland, and maybe even a wild pony or two! The paved bike path runs parallel to the park road, with additional access to campground loops and beach overlooks. No cars on the trail make it great for families.

2. Salisbury City Park Trails & Greenway (Salisbury, MD)

Distance: ~5 miles total
Why ride here: Ride along the Wicomico River through Salisbury’s charming park system. These trails connect to the Urban Greenway, weaving through woods, water features, and picnic areas. It’s a great afternoon ride for locals and visitors alike.

3. Snow Hill to Pocomoke Trail Connector (MD)

Status: Partially completed / road route recommended
Why ride here: While not a continuous bike trail yet, the Snow Hill to Pocomoke corridor offers scenic low-traffic back roads ideal for road cyclists. With both towns being historic gems, a round trip makes for a relaxing day ride with plenty of places to stop and snack.

4. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Trails (Chincoteague, VA)

Distance: ~8+ miles
Why ride here: These flat trails are located within the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and include access to the Wildlife Loop, Lighthouse Trail, and Beach Access Trail. Perfect for nature lovers—bring binoculars to spot migratory birds and wild ponies!

5. Onancock & Historic Eastern Shore Backroads (VA)

Why ride here: Onancock is a small harbor town with beautifully preserved homes and easy access to flat, rural roads. Create your own loop with quiet farmland scenery, old churches, and wide-open skies. A stop at Mallards at the Wharf for lunch seals the deal.

6. Pocomoke River State Park Bike Loops (Snow Hill & Pocomoke City, MD)

Why ride here: While known more for hiking and kayaking, Pocomoke River State Park offers a few short bike-friendly loops near its campgrounds. The shaded forest paths and quiet surroundings make for a peaceful, easy ride.

Tips Before You Go:

  • Helmet up! Even on back roads, safety comes first.

  • Bring bug spray and water, especially in the warmer months.

  • Check for closures at wildlife refuges or parks after rain.

  • Many towns (like Snow Hill, Berlin, and Onancock) have bike shops and cafés that are cyclist-friendly and worth the stop!

Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just looking for a fresh air escape, the Eastern Shore is full of trails that let you slow down and savor the scenery. Happy riding!
